The Piedmont Division Model Train Show

Each year, the Piedmont Division of the Southeastern Region, National Model Railroad Association, Inc. stages the bigggest and best Model Train Show in the Atlanta area. The latest show was held at the Cobb Galleria Centre on March 15-16, 2014 with an attendance of more than 4,000. Some came from as far away as Chattanooga, TN, Birmingham, AL, and Savannah and Macon, GA - and that is just people with whom your humble correspondent talked. Vendors came from as far away as Maryland, Texas, and Miami, FL.

Several members of the North Atlanta Barons play an integral role in operating various segments of the show.

Bill Zawacki, MMR, serves as Chairman of the Auctions/White Elephant Sale Committee. Along with help from Jim Bando and others, Bill runs the White Elephant Sale, an opportunity for buyers and sellers of used model railroad equipment to sell equipment that they no longer need or purchase older and rare equipment that may no longer be available commercially.

I.D. Jackson serves as Chairman of the Raffle Layout Committee. He and Walt Liles spent most of the two-day show running the booth and selling raffle tickets. I.D. made some repairs to the layout's locomotive driver motor gears on Sunday morning. Following the raffle drawing on Sunday afternoon at the show, I.D., Walt, and Bob Wood delivered the layout to the winning family.

One of the major differences between the Piedmont Division Model Train Show and other shows is the assistance that Division volunteers provide our vendors with load-in prior to the show and moving out after the show closes. Vendors tell us that makes our show special for them. In most years, Howard Goodwin would have been working the docks, but he was recovering from knee-surgery less than two weeks before the show. Perry Lamb worked both the floor and the docks during the strike and move-out. Bob Wood was one of more than a dozen volunteers helping vendors move their merchandise from the docks to the floor prior to the show and back to the docks at the close of the show.

We have pictures and some movies of the Model Train Show, and we will be posting them here soon...
